The Cultivation of Talent
This is it! If I ever write a book, this quote will likely be featured as my opening.
The assumption and archaic ideology that athletes and sports participants do not need to train to perform needs to be eradicated...especially among those who hold the title of coach.
Talent is likened unto a seed found within the earth. That seed requires good soil, nutrients, water, sun, and toiling in order to grow strong roots. As the roots extend, the planter must continue invest time, energy, and sustenance to ensure that the plant continuously works to fulfill its potential. With dedication, time, and WORK, the plant will soon learn and develop the capability to grow a stem, leaves, and good fruit. Likewise, talent and skill must be developed and cultivated by working! Just like a seed, talent cannot realize it’s potential and skills cannot be developed without cultivation.
And if you cannot understand this analogy, then I challenge coaches and ADs to hit the track today and run a 400m without training and walk away fine hahahahaha think again! You’ll be sore for months 😛 and no you cannot use age as an excuse! Because according to your rules of the game, running is easy right? A runner can just hop off the couch right? Track folks just run around in a circle, that’s not skill right? So at your age, in your sedentary state, hit this track and you better not jog punk! 😠
Then after we call the ambulance, understand this...athletes must work to succeed. Quit banking your success off their God-given talents. That’s not your work! That’s God’s. He planted the seed, you didn’t. As a coach, your job is to do your part in cultivating that athlete’s talent. An athlete must have a foundation (roots). Athletes must work (train). Athletes must show improvement over the course of the season (blossom). Athletes HATE stagnation (whither away). Whether the athlete is young or old, talented or heart-filled, when they hit that track, their objective is to achieve and discover their best self.
